Meet The Member - Nannies 4 Grannies
We caught up with the team at Nannies 4 Grannies to discover the story behind this trusted local business. Built on compassion, companionship and personalised support, they help older people live independently while giving families complete peace of mind.
We are happy to have Nannies 4 Grannies as part of the We Are St Albans community! Could you tell us a little about the journey behind the business, how did the idea for Nannies 4 Grannies come about, and how it has evolved since it was established?
Nannies 4 Grannies was established in 2014 by Kay Naden and Shelley Kainth, inspired by their own experiences of supporting older loved ones while balancing busy careers, often from many miles away. They recognised the need for a service that could provide practical home help, companionship and support, enabling older people to continue living in the comfort of their own homes while giving families the reassurance that someone they trusted was there to help.
Since then, Nannies 4 Grannies has grown from a small local business into a trusted service supporting hundreds of clients across Harpenden, St Albans and the surrounding areas. Our team has expanded to more than 25 staff, including a dedicated management team, and we're proud to continue welcoming new clients every month while staying true to the personal, compassionate approach we started with.
Nannies 4 Grannies provides companionship, home help, support with appointments, shopping, meal preparation and more. What do you find most rewarding about helping older people maintain their independence and quality of life?
The most rewarding part of what we do is seeing the difference even small acts of kindness can make. Whether it's sharing a cup of tea, helping with household tasks, accompanying someone to an appointment or simply being a friendly face, those moments can bring comfort, confidence and connection.
We know that family and friends can't always be there, so it's a privilege to provide support that gives both our clients and their loved ones peace of mind. Taking the time to really get to know each person means we can tailor our support to what matters most to them. Watching someone become more confident, stay connected to their community and continue enjoying life at home is what makes our work so meaningful.
Supporting families across St Albans and the surrounding area, what do you enjoy most about being part of the local community, and how does that shape the way you deliver your services?
Being part of the local community is so important. We love getting involved in local events and supporting initiatives that bring people together, particularly those that celebrate and support older adults. From marking International Older Persons Day and hosting afternoon tea dances to taking part in events such as the Harpenden Seniors Fair, these activities help reduce isolation, encourage connection and celebrate the amazing people we support.
We’re also proud to have supported local organisations and charities, including The Harpenden Trust and Age Concern St Albans. In previous years, we have raised money for causes such as the Alzheimer’s Society and The Salvation Army through organised walks, tombolas, games and collections. These experiences allow us to build relationships locally and continue providing the best possible support for our clients. Being a local business means we understand the community we serve, and that shapes the way we deliver our services, helping our clients remain independent while staying connected to the people, places and activities they know and love.
Compassion and companionship are at the heart of what you do. What values and principles guide the way Nannies 4 Grannies supports both clients and their families?
Compassion, dignity and respect are at the heart of everything we do. We believe that every client is an individual with different needs, preferences and routines, so we work closely with them and their families to create personalised support that reflects what matters most to them. We also strongly believe that companionship is just as important as practical support. That’s why all our visits are a minimum of one hour, giving our nannies the time to build genuine relationships rather than simply completing tasks. Whether it’s sharing a cup of tea, playing a board game, accompanying someone to an appointment or helping around the home, we aim to provide support that enhances quality of life, confidence and independence.
Our nannies share our values and complete training in areas including, but not limited to, safeguarding, health and safety, dementia awareness and manual handling before supporting clients. We also invest in ongoing development, such as Compassionate Communication Skills Training delivered by the Hospice of St Francis, which explored compassionate conversations around ageing and declining health, navigating difficult emotions, discussing sensitive topics, improving communication, and building resilience and emotional wellbeing. By combining training, experience and genuine compassion, we aim to give families confidence that their loved ones are receiving thoughtful, reliable support from people who truly care.
Many people assume support at home is only needed when someone can no longer manage independently. How do your services help people remain confident, active and connected while continuing to live in their own homes?
Many people think support at home is only needed when someone can no longer manage on their own. We believe that having the right support at the right time helps people continue living life on their own terms for longer. Our services are designed to give people the confidence to continue doing the things they enjoy, while providing a helping hand where it's needed. Every client is different, so we tailor our visits to suit their personality, interests and individual needs. We encourage trips out where possible to build confidence and help people stay active.
Social connection is a crucial part of staying independent. Our companionship visits help to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, and we're proud to organise our own group activities and events, giving clients opportunities to meet others and stay connected within their local community. We also provide practical support, from accompanying clients to appointments and activities, helping with shopping and meal preparation, to offering short-term support following a hospital stay or respite for family carers. By offering practical help alongside meaningful companionship, we support people to stay active, connected and comfortable in the homes they love.
One of the unique aspects of Nannies 4 Grannies is the focus on companionship and meaningful relationships. How important is social interaction in supporting wellbeing, and what difference have you seen it make to clients’ lives?
Social interaction plays a huge role in wellbeing, which is why we believe companionship is just as important as practical support. Every visit lasts a minimum of one hour, giving our nannies the time to build genuine relationships rather than simply completing tasks.
Our aim is for every visit to feel like a friend popping in, rather than someone arriving to work through a list of tasks. We take the time to get to know each client, matching them with a local nanny who shares their interests and genuinely enjoys spending time with them. Whether it's a cup of tea and a chat, a game of cards, a trip to the shops or lunch out, these moments can reduce loneliness, build confidence and help people feel connected to those around them.
We've seen first-hand the difference meaningful companionship can make. Clients often become more confident, more engaged and happier in their day-to-day lives, while families have the reassurance of knowing their loved one has someone they trust and genuinely look forward to seeing.
Your team supports people in many ways, from trips out and appointments to simply sharing a cup of tea and a conversation. What aspects of the service tend to surprise families the most when they first start working with you?
Many families are surprised by just how flexible and personalised our service is. At Nannies 4 Grannies, we don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach and therefore every support plan is tailored to the individual and can evolve over time as their needs change. Families are often surprised by just how much difference companionship makes. While we can provide help with practical tasks such as shopping, meal preparation and accompanying clients to appointments, it's often the simple things such as sharing a cup of tea, enjoying a chat or getting out of the house for a walk that have the most positive impact.
Families also appreciate the continuity we provide. We aim to keep the same small team of local nannies supporting each client, allowing trusted relationships to develop and giving families confidence that their loved one is being cared for by people who understand them.
As the needs of older adults continue to evolve, how does Nannies 4 Grannies ensure its services remain flexible and responsive to both clients and their families?
We know that people's needs change over time, so flexibility is built into the way we work. Rather than offering a standard service, we take the time to understand each client's lifestyle, preferences and priorities, adapting our support as circumstances change. Whether someone needs more regular companionship, help with appointments or short-term support following a hospital stay, we're there when we're needed.
Maintaining open communication with clients and their families is such an important part of this. By listening carefully and building trusted relationships, we can respond quickly to changing needs and continue providing support that helps older people feel confident, connected and comfortable in their own homes.
Looking ahead, are there any exciting plans, initiatives, or developments that you’re particularly looking forward to for Nannies 4 Grannies?
Looking ahead, we're always exploring new ways to enhance the service we provide. We're particularly excited about developing our Nannie Activity Pack and Client Dementia Pack, giving our team even more resources to create meaningful, engaging experiences for the people we care for.
These initiatives reflect our commitment to helping clients feel valued, stimulated and connected, while giving families additional reassurance.
Finally, when the team isn’t busy supporting clients, what are some favourite places in St Albans to enjoy a coffee, meet friends, or relax and unwind?
When we're not supporting our clients, we enjoy making the most of everything St Albans has to offer. For a coffee and catch-up, we love local favourites such as The Potting Shed and Fade to Black. We're also fortunate to have beautiful places like Verulamium Park and St Albans Cathedral nearby, perfect for a walk and a chance to unwind. Supporting local businesses is important to us, and we're proud to be part of such a welcoming community.
