We are happy to have you as a member of the We Are Harpenden community! Could you tell us a little about your journey, what you did before Alexander Financial, and what inspired you to build a business specialising in foreign exchange and international payments?
My career has spanned more than 20 years in financial services, including stockbroking, trading, institutional sales, and international payments. I've held senior leadership positions within regulated financial firms and spent many years helping businesses and investors navigate financial markets and international transactions.
Throughout my career, I noticed that many businesses and individuals were not receiving the level of service or expertise they deserved when moving money internationally. Foreign exchange is often treated as a commodity, yet exchange rate fluctuations can have a significant impact on profitability, property purchases, and investment returns.
I founded Alexander Financial to provide a more personal, transparent, and consultative approach. My goal was to combine institutional-grade expertise with the kind of service where clients know they can pick up the phone and speak to someone who understands their specific circumstances.
Alexander Financial helps both businesses and individuals navigate foreign currency transactions. What do you find most rewarding about helping clients save money and simplify what can often be a complicated process?
The most rewarding part is making a genuine difference to a client's outcome. Whether it's helping a family purchasing their dream home overseas, or supporting a business importing goods from Europe, even small improvements in exchange rates or timing can result in significant savings.
Many clients initially find the process intimidating or confusing. Helping them understand their options, reduce risk, and feel confident about their decisions is incredibly satisfying. Building long-term relationships based on trust is something I value highly.
Working in and around Harpenden, what do you enjoy most about being part of the local community, and how does that influence the way you run your business?
Harpenden has a fantastic sense of community. It's a place where people genuinely support local businesses and value personal relationships. There is a strong entrepreneurial spirit here, but also a real emphasis on trust and reputation.
That directly influences how I run Alexander Financial. I believe business should be built on relationships, integrity, and delivering what you promise. Word-of-mouth recommendations remain one of the most powerful endorsements any business can receive.
Your business is built on providing a personal service in a sector that can often feel complex and impersonal. What values and principles guide the way you work with your clients?
Trust, transparency, and responsiveness are at the heart of everything we do.
Clients need clear information, honest advice, and confidence that their interests come first. We avoid jargon wherever possible and focus on helping clients understand their options. Every client has different objectives, so taking the time to understand their circumstances is essential.
I also believe strongly in being available when clients need support, especially during periods of market volatility or significant transactions.
Many people only think about exchange rates when they're going on holiday. What are some of the situations where businesses and individuals can benefit most from using a specialist foreign exchange provider?
There are many situations where specialist expertise can make a significant difference.
For businesses, importing and exporting goods, paying overseas suppliers, managing international payrolls, and handling cross-border investments can all benefit from improved exchange rates and risk management strategies.
For individuals, buying property abroad, emigrating, receiving overseas pensions, inheritance transfers, or making large international payments are all situations where exchange rate movements can have a substantial financial impact.
You work with everyone from importers and exporters to people buying property overseas. How do you tailor your service to suit such a wide range of clients and their individual requirements?
Every client's situation is unique. The first step is always understanding their objectives, timelines, and level of experience with foreign exchange.
A business managing regular international payments may require a very different solution to a family purchasing a villa in Spain. Some clients want ongoing market guidance and risk management strategies, while others simply want the most efficient way to transfer funds.
By taking a consultative approach, we can tailor solutions that are appropriate for each client's needs.
Currency markets can move quickly and be influenced by global events. How do you help clients manage uncertainty and make informed decisions when transferring money internationally?
Education and communication are key.
While nobody can predict markets with certainty, we can help clients understand the factors influencing exchange rates and discuss strategies to manage risk. This may include market updates, rate alerts, forward contracts, or simply helping clients plan ahead rather than reacting at the last minute.
Our role is to provide information and guidance so clients can make informed decisions with confidence.
What are some of the biggest misconceptions people have about foreign exchange services, and what tends to surprise clients most when they start working with Alexander Financial?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that all providers offer similar rates and service levels. In reality, there can be significant differences in pricing, expertise, and customer support.
Clients are often surprised by how much they can save compared with traditional banking channels, particularly on larger transactions. They are also often surprised by how much personalised support they receive throughout the process.
Looking ahead, are there any exciting developments, services, or goals for Alexander Financial that you're particularly looking forward to?
We are focused on continuing to grow while maintaining the personal service that differentiates us.
At the same time, we're expanding our network of business relationships and strategic partnerships to support a growing client base across the UK and internationally.
When you're not helping clients move money around the world, where are your favourite places in Harpenden to grab a coffee, enjoy a meal, or unwind after a busy day?
Harpenden has so many great independent businesses. For coffee, it's hard to beat a good local café and catching up with friends or clients in town. For meals, there are some fantastic restaurants offering everything from casual dining to special occasions.
One of the things I enjoy most is simply walking through Rothamsted Park or spending time outdoors with family and friends. It's a great way to switch off and recharge.
