Meet The Member - Warren of DYSK Air Conditioning
We caught up with Warren of DYSK Air Conditioning to learn more about the story behind this trusted local business. With over 20 years of experience, they're passionate about delivering expert heating and cooling solutions while building lasting relationships with customers across Harpenden and beyond.
We are happy to have you as a member of the We Are Harpenden community! Could you tell us a little about your journey? Did you do anything before DYSK Air Conditioning, and what led you into the air conditioning and climate control industry?
Before entering the HVAC sector, I began my career at Comet Plc, where I sold a wide range of electrical goods — from £20 kettles to £2,000 kitchen appliances. Starting at the age of 16, I developed strong customer service skills, learning how to engage with people effectively both face-to-face and over the phone. In 2002, I applied for a Junior Projects Engineer role at a distributor. Despite significant competition, I was successful — and the rest, as they say, is history.
DYSK has been serving the industry for more than 20 years and works with leading manufacturers including Toshiba, Samsung and Panasonic. What do you find most rewarding about helping customers find the right heating and cooling solutions for their homes and businesses?
I particularly enjoy the initial customer enquiry stage. There’s nothing better than building that early trust and helping them choose the right air conditioning system. Knowing they’ve placed their confidence in me and our company gives me a huge amount of satisfaction."
Being based in Harpenden, what do you enjoy most about running your business here, and how has the local community supported your growth over the years?
I really enjoy being based in Harpenden. There’s a genuine community feel here, and it’s great to support other local businesses while they support us. I love the opportunity to meet like-minded people and be part of a town that values quality service and strong relationships. That local support has definitely played a big part in our growth over the years.
In an industry where reliability, technical expertise and customer service are essential, what values and principles guide the way you work with customers and partners?
Reliability, honesty, and clear communication are at the heart of everything we do. We focus on giving customers realistic advice rather than pushing the most expensive option. If a solution isn’t right for their needs or budget, we’ll say so. We treat every customer the way we would want to be treated - with transparency, respect, and a commitment to delivering what we promise.
Air conditioning has become increasingly popular in UK homes as well as commercial spaces. What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in customer demand and expectations since you first started in the industry?
Customer expectations have changed significantly. When I started, people mainly wanted basic cooling. Today, they’re much more interested in energy efficiency, running costs, air quality, and smart controls. There’s also far greater awareness of heat pumps and whole-house solutions. Customers are now thinking long-term about comfort, sustainability, and value.
Many people still associate air conditioning purely with cooling. What are some of the features, benefits, or energy-efficient technologies that tend to surprise customers the most?
Many people are surprised to learn how quiet and efficient modern systems are. Features like air purification, dehumidification, and app-based smart controls often impress them. Another big one is how effectively modern heat pumps can provide heating as well as cooling - even in UK winters - while slashing energy bills compared to older systems."
With so many products and systems available, how do you help customers choose the right solution for their property, budget and long-term needs?
We start by listening carefully to the customer’s needs, property layout, and budget. We assist our client after they have carried out a proper site survey and then present a few tailored options with clear pros and cons. The goal is to help them make an informed decision that works for their home or business both now and in the future - not just sell them a unit.
The heating and cooling sector is constantly evolving, particularly with growing interest in energy efficiency and heat pump technology. How do you stay ahead of industry developments and emerging technologies?
We stay ahead by working closely with leading manufacturers like Toshiba, Samsung, and Panasonic, and by regularly attending industry training and exhibitions. I’m also passionate about new developments in heat pump technology and low-carbon solutions, so I make time to study emerging products and regulations to ensure we’re always offering the best options.
Looking ahead, are there any exciting projects, innovations, or future plans for DYSK that you’re particularly excited about?
We’re excited to take on more ambitious whole-house and commercial projects across Hertfordshire in collaboration with our trusted client base. The growing demand for energy-efficient solutions is a really positive direction for the industry.
When you’re not helping customers stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter, where are your favourite places in Harpenden to grab a coffee, enjoy a meal, or unwind after a busy day?
I enjoy grabbing a coffee at Harris + Hoole or a beer at The Harpenden Arms. For a nice meal, I really rate The Silver Cup and Tabure, amongst many others. On a sunny day, you’ll often find me walking around Harpenden, trying to unwind.
Finally, please tell us a fun fact about yourself!
Fun fact: I once supplied an air conditioning system to a customer’s home… and accidentally became the godfather to their new puppy because I spent so much time there!
