Organic Hairdressing By Sarah

We had a chat with our member Sarah to learn more about her hairdressing business and discover why she's so passionate about organic products!

We are very happy to have you as a member of We Are Harpenden. We are sure our readers would love to hear about your journey, have you always wanted to be a hairdresser?

Thank you for having me!. It is all that I know really, I have been a hairdresser for over 25 years and still love it. It fits in perfectly around my family and I would recommend it to young people who may be put off by the salary at the start of their career. It is creative, flexible, fun, and I meet so many amazing people. I have always been able to adapt my business at various stages in my life.

You offer organic hairdressing, what would you say are the main benefits to your customers’ lives when they turn to organic hairdressing?

My products are safer for my clients as they have fewer chemicals, with †the benefit of giving beautifully conditioned healthy hair. They are also better for the environment and are cruelty-free.

Is there anything that people feel particularly surprised by when it comes to organic hairdressing?

Organic products do everything chemical hair dye does, such as cover 100% grey and achieve gorgeous blonds, reds, and glossy brunettes. I personally think that they are better, and your hair looks healthy with long-lasting results.

For someone who’s looking to transition to more natural care for their hair, what would you recommend they start with?

Avoid silicones as they are basically plastic. Sulphates which are so harsh on the scalp and hair. And parabens as they are toxic and not necessary and are added as a cheap preservative. These will be clearly labelled as ‘free from’ on products.

Has your approach to hairdressing changed since you started, if so, how?

I started using organic products over 15 years ago when my grandma sadly got brain cancer. I started to feel worried about applying chemicals directly onto clients’ heads with the worry that some of the chemicals would be absorbing into their system through the scalp.

When it comes to your business, what would you say you are most proud of?

That I have continued using natural products and have no interest in using chemicals again. Also opening my first organic salon in Birmingham in 2010 was a big achievement which I had for nearly 10 years.

What is one thing everyone can do at home to better look after their hair?

Keep your hair care as natural as possible, by avoiding the ingredients that I have mentioned here. And try to use organic colours, if possible, to avoid the risk to your health and your hair.

Looking forward, is there anything you are particularly excited about? Are there any plans you can share with us?

I am launching my natural hair-loss and scalp therapy clinic this year providing safer, more natural hair and scalp services for all kinds of conditions from alopecia to psoriasis and male hair loss. I am very excited.

What do you like most about what you do?

It is creative, I meet wonderful clients, and I make people feel more confident. It is also flexible, and I can fit it around family life.

Where in Harpenden is your favourite spot to go when you aren’t styling people’s hair?

I have an amazing yoga teacher called Imogen North, who teaches at Park Hall. I am a qualified yoga instructor myself and her classes teach me something new every class.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I have lived in 5 different homes over the last few years, from Singapore, Birmingham, and London. But moved to Harpenden 2 years ago and now call it home, and I have no plans to move for a very long time.
