Meet The Member - AJ Physio

aj physio, harpenden

We caught up with our members at AJ Physio to gain an insight into their world of physiotherapy.

We are very happy to have you as a member of We Are Harpenden. We would love to hear about your journey, what made you both want to get involved in the world of physio?

The foundation is our love for sport and exercise. We met at college, where we studied Sports Science before moving on to our undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Finding a sector we’re passionate about helped direct our pathways. Working individually and as part of a team, being results driven and helping others are core traits we both share that are essential for our world.

What is your favourite thing about running a business in Harpenden?

Aside from it being a vibrant, picturesque town, the breadth of like-minded small business owners, ample networking opportunities and a community that has sport, exercise and health at its heart make Harpenden an idyllic location for us.

Before people come in for a session what is a question they usually ask?

Location information i.e. access and parking; what to wear; what to expect from the session; how to pay/book; how many sessions they’ll need!

Are there any misconceptions about physiotherapy you would like to share with us?

There are many! The most common are the causes of pain being singular as we are complicated beings. We do our best to limit contact time, but there are no quick/simple fixes! Intervention-wise, a lot of people assume massages cure everything and are the majority of what we do. Education, coaching and reassurance are some of our most powerful tools that can seem undervalued, and they have no physical intervention.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?

Helping people achieve their goals and knowing you’ve played a part in their recovery.

Could you tell us how your approach to physiotherapy is unique?

We are evidence and data-based, removing guesswork, opinion and bias. Using state-of-the-art testing and rehabilitation equipment to demonstrate to our patients where/how/why things are happening. Providing honest, compassionate care in a community-based environment for all demographics.

If there is one thing you could implement in everyone’s lives related to your practice, what would it be?

Taking ownership of your recovery, being committed and accountable once you have received guidance/input from a specialist. The biggest part of this comes back to patience, there will always be setbacks, de-load weeks, and unplanned life situations but with the right commitment and consistency, these values will always be rewarded.

When it comes to your business, what would you say are some of your highlights? What are you most proud of?

As we are a new business; we’re proud of making the jump from the comfort and security of full-time employment to launch our own project. Highlights include opening a second location in our first year of full trading and hitting our fundraising target for local charities and community-based initiatives.

Looking forward, is there anything you are particularly excited about? Are there any plans you can share with us?

We have lots of exciting ideas and initiatives planned; many of them are centred around engaging with local communities and providing exercise-based intervention to prevent injuries/improve overall health and create social interactions! We have several pillars to the foundation of our business which will allow us to grow servicing a vast amount of the population. Watch this space.

Where in Harpenden is your favourite spot to go in your spare time?

We’ve unofficially completed a pub tour of the town! Lots of time in the Engineer playing darts and The Silver Cup for food and drinks. Spending our wages in Brad & Dills & The Pudding Stop and running through the town and Rothamsted Park.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

Adam’s interesting fact and claim to fame is that he had dinner at the Norwegian King’s castle in Oslo whilst working as a contractor at the British Embassy.

Jordan’s interesting fact and claim to fame is that he currently is the Head Physio for the Fiji Rugby Union team.
