What a gem in Harpenden!
The Silver Cup is located in the heart of our community, on the corner of the common, and provides the perfect spot for an afternoon drink, fabulous lunch or dinner.
In 2020, the pub came under new management with an aim of maintaining the traditions of a classic British public house whilst bringing a contemporary twist to the food and drink offering.
It is now owned by two locals, Matthew and Michael, with a mutual love and experience of all things food, drink and hospitality and does that show!
We had the pleasure of sampling their 5 course set pairing menu and we can truly say that the food was incredible.
We started with some beautiful starter dishes, one of which was duck egg gribiche & barley cracker and the other a cheesy chip with pickled onion.
The first of the 5 dishes was a beetroot tartare with blackberry, hazelnut and chicken heart which was delicious and paired with a white Piteira Granja from Portugal.
The second dish consisted of pig cheek and wild mushroom ragu on wet polenta, this was simply amazing and a firm favourite on their menu. It was paired with a Chardonnay from Tesselaarsdal in South Africa.
The main dish was Salt Marsh Lamb two ways with aubergine, black garlic and burnt lettuce. The quality of the lamb was out of this world and we couldn’t get enough of it. The lamb was paired with a South African Pinotage, The Mentors from the Stellenbosch region.
For dessert we had not one but two dishes. The first being a burnt butter financier with Williams pear & almond and the second one a choux bun with mascarpone, orange and chocolate. Both dishes were a delightful way to finish this 5 course menu. The choux bun was paired with a dessert wine from Domaine des Baumard Coteaux du Layon in France which was very smooth with the chocolate dessert.
We couldn’t recommend The Silver Cup enough, the staff and service was outstandingly good, they really have an extensive knowledge and passion for their menu. We can’t wait to return.
From today they will offer an a la carte menu and they also do an amazing Sunday roast! Make sure to book to try their food for yourself!
