Meet The Member - Clare of Earth Interiors

Earth Interiors

We caught up with our member Clare of Earth Interiors to talk all things Interior Design.

Hi Clare, it’s a real pleasure having you as part of the We Are Harpenden community. When did you found your company Earth Interiors?

Thank you, it is great to be part of such a strong community that proactively supports local businesses. Earth Interiors was born in August 2022, I had been working on Interior projects for some time and finally decided to take the plunge. In all honesty, I was sitting on the beach in Lefkada thinking of business names and Earth Interiors just came to me, I ran back to the apartment and registered it on the spot there and then!

What was your inspiration behind setting up the brand?

I am a people person, I have always worked in an industry that required me to work closely with customers, anticipating their needs and interpreting them into products that they would love. I wanted to combine my experience, and passion for interiors in a conscious way that aligned with my values. Simply put, the inspiration behind the brand is to have a positive influence on my clients lives through thoughtful design and exceptional service.

What is the significance of the name Earth Interiors?

Inspired by nature, my design philosophy centres around creating calm, harmonious spaces, designed with simplicity, natural materials, and warm hues. I love to design interiors that are not only aesthetically beautiful but also promote sustainable living and support your overall well-being.

Prior to running your own interior design company, what did you do for a living?

I worked for John Lewis for 25 years as a senior Buyer for fashion.  My role was diverse from buying global brands to developing own label products with designers and suppliers worldwide.  I spent my last year working in the sustainability team, leading the setup of the circular economy function to enable us to design, source and buy more sustainably.

Was it a big leap to set yourself up on your own? How have you found the region as a market for home improvement and design?

In one word YES, previously I had the security and support of a large employer, working with big teams for 25 years and suddenly it was myself and the dog for the company, managing everything on my own.  I particularly missed the tech department!!  I wouldn’t change it for the world now, I love being in control of my destiny and watching my business grow.  The local area is a thriving region for design, people are continuing to build and renovate, therefore seeking Interior design advice on how to make the best use of their homes.

What does a client need to know and share with you to bring their dream vision for their home to life?

It is so important for me to understand my clients, their preferences, lifestyle, and aspirations for their home.  How do they want to use their space? How would you like it to feel? What is your vision and how can I help you? Are all questions I will ask. My role is to listen, interpret, and translate my client’s vision into a beautiful home that they will love for years to come.

How do you stay inspired by the latest trends and techniques?

Every day is a school day, I visit Interior design shows where you can view the latest trends and products coming into the industry.  Read books and publications. I sit on committees; I’m delighted to have been accepted onto the sustainability committee for the British Institute of Interior Design.  I work alongside other brilliant businesses, suppliers, and makers where we share best practices and learn from each other on a daily basis.

What do you love most about interior design?

For me, I love the process of bringing a space to life by infusing it with the essence of the people who live there.  Design is a powerful tool and when used correctly can have a profound effect on people's lives, it can make you think and feel differently just by entering a room.

Do you think that this region is good for sourcing great home decor/soft furnishings?

Yes, absolutely the surrounding area is a melting pot of brilliant small businesses and bespoke makers.  I am a huge advocate of supporting the local community and spreading the word of what is available to clients.

Is there anywhere in Harpenden, that you like to enjoy thanks to its interior design and ambiance and where do you like to unwind locally?

Ah, such choice! Where do I start?

I’m a big fan of the Oval Café when I want to work, the ambiance there is wonderful, and I find my productivity goes through the roof! The Silver palate, I have lots of business meetings there, they are always very welcoming, and the food and coffee is fantastic! The home edit, is such a gorgeous shop, how do they always have what I need in such a small space. Tabure for dinner, great design, fabulous food, and great service. And many more…………………
