Affinity Water are making a splash

SOS: SAVE OUR STREAMS – Affinity Water’s latest campaign!

Affinity Water have been making a splash over the last few months with an enormous bath tub for their latest campaign SOS: Save Our Streams popping up in several towns and cities such as St. Albans, Hitchin, Watford and Hemel Hempstead.

This huge show-stopping bath has a capacity of 10,000 litres, which stands at around the size of about 125 real life baths and only 0.05% of the water use that we need to be saving every single day!

Water is a precious resource. The water that we use and drink is taken from our nearby streams and rivers. Affinity Water is on a mission to help save the country's chalk streams, which are at risk of extinction due to the impacts of climate change and increasing demand for water from a growing population.

In the South East, we have the highest water consumption in the country and In our area, we use 9% more water than the national average. The combination of a drier than average 3 years, high water consumption and climate change means that our environment is suffering.

Affinity Water’s team encouraged visitors to the tub to help educate how they can reduce water wastage in their homes and gardens so we will be able to make sure that we have clean and plentiful water for generations to come.

Our local Batford Springs Nature Reserve is one of the 210 chalk streams in the world. England is home to 85% of them and their rarity has led them to be called ‘England’s Great Barrier Reef’. They are in fact more endangered than both the Bengal Tiger and the Black Rhino!

What Can We Do To help?

So many of us are guilty of leaving the tap running whist brushing our teeth or over-rinsing dishes whilst multi-tasking, but we must stop! By using less water in our homes, we will be able to make sure that we have clean and plentiful water for generations to come. Here are some ways we can help:

🔺Claim free water saving gadgets at the Save Our Streams Website www.saveourstreams.co.uk  which help the environment and also save you money too!

🔺Fix water leaks and dripping taps

🔺Have a quick(er) shower instead of a bath, and don’t overfill.

🔺Use the toilet single flush instead of the double

🔺Stop the tap whilst brushing your teeth

🔺Wash up dishes in the sink instead of under running water

🔺Wash your car with a bucket

🔺Use a water butt to water the garden rather than a hose

We need to save 21 million litres of water wastage every day, which is equivalent to: 140 million cups of tea. All of these little drops add up to a big splash!

Let’s be part of the movement!

Affinity Water also hosted ‘Stand-up for Our Streams’, a unique stand-up comedy gig and a milestone event in the SOS: Save Our Streams campaign from within the River Chess, a local chalk stream in Hertfordshire.

The former ‘Bake Off’ front woman, QI host and keen environmentalist Sandi Toksvig joined fellow comedians Mark Watson, Eshaan Akbar and Helen Arney to support Affinity Water’s campaign in what was perhaps the most surreal gig of their careers and performed in front of an audience of 30 socially distanced guests. Please see our blog post here for further information on the brilliant event!
